Introduction
One definition of sustainability states that if the initial energy and natural resources used to construct a new building can meet the needs of the program and the occupants far into the future, the building is sustainable. However, for a building to last, it must be one of two types: a "high road" or a "low road" building. Your readings discuss these notions in detail. Furthermore, the building must also be resilient, that is, one that maintains its purpose and function even while undergoing extreme shocks. For example, even though a building may experience flooding or a decrease in energy supplies, the building will be designed and constructed in such a way that these events will not prevent it from functioning. This project will look at how to design an adaptable building by creating either a "high road" or a "low building" that is also resilient and will last several hundred years.
